林瓔
Maya Ying Lin
b. 1959, Athens, OH |
Architect and sculptor. Won national design competition
for the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial in
Washington, DC She was then 21
and still a student at Yale. Although her simple and stark design was initially
controversial (it wasn't the heroic
monument many expected of a war
memorial), the "wall" has come to be greatly admired and a major tourist destination.
Other works include the Civil Rights
Memorial in Montgomery, AL. and
a landscape sculpture called "The
Wave Field."
She also authored "Boundaries," where
she describes how she goes about her
creating her designs. She was inducted
into the National Women's Hall of Fame
in 2005.

I. M. Pei
b. 1917, Guangzhou
d. 1990 |
World-renowned architect. He
studied architecture at MIT and Harvard. He founded the architectural
firm of
Pei, Cobb, Freed, and Partners .
His designs are characterized by sharp geometric shapes. Among the
best known buildings he designed are the
East Building of the
National Gallery of Art, the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ,
the
Pyramide du Louvre , Hong
Kong's
Bank of China. Pei was awarded
the Pritzker Award, the world's
most prestigious architecture award, in 1983.

Billie Tsien
b. 1949

Architect. Billie worked as a painter and teacher after receiving her degree
in Fine Arts from Yale. She obtained her
masters in Architecture at UCLA in 1977.
She is admired for various architectural
project created with her partner and husband Tod Williams.
Their work, which is known for blending of
art and architecture, include the Neurosciences
Institute in La Jolla, and the Museum of
Folk Art in NYC. |

Vern
Yip
b. 1968, Hong Kong

Interior decorator. Although best known as an interior designer, Vern first received
a BA in Economics and a BS in Chemistry before
graduating with an MBA in Architecture. He
gained national attention as one of the designer
of The Learning Channel's Trading Spaces,
an interior design reality TV show. His new
project is the NBC prime-time show Home Intervention.
He also runs his own design firm and website. |
