Xian Sightseeing: Drum and Bell Towers Square
|
| Xian's city center was a rather pleasant surprise. Although, in ancient times
it was known as Chang'an, the capital of China, that had been more than a thousand years earlier.
However, instead of the little provincial town, we found a bustling metropolis
with as cosmopolitan flair. The streets and the shopping area around the city center are lively.

| The prototypical Chinese city of old would have a city wall and a drum and bell towers to announce the opening
and closing of the city gates. Xian's present day Bell Tower very much defines the center of the city center: it is located
at the intersection of North, South, East and West Avenues.

De Fa Chang Dumpling Restaurant
This restaurant, which is a short walk from the Drum and Bell Tower, was first opened in 1936. It is famous for the quality and variety
of dumplings served in the premises.
Their dumplings were so impossibly cute that it seemed wrong to be eating them. We should have frozen them and sold them on eBay.
