Chinese Erotica at the Movies: The Golden Lotus
There are several movie adaptations of the most famous Chinese
erotic novel The Golden Lotus, a product of the sixteenth
century. The story is about Hsi-meng Ching, a well-to-do man who already heads a households
of four wives as the story begins but sets out to acquire wife number five (Golden Lotus).

The storyline recycles many of the main characters of the movie but it really
does not attempt to stay close to the book at all. This is most obviously so in the case of Golden Lotus,
who is presented as a naive victim of Hsi-meng Ching, a major change from her character as a flirt
who is as guilty as her lover in plotting to kill her husband. |
