Chinese Erotica at the Movies: Modern Drama

  Title Mini Review
Emmanuelle in Hong Kong
Starring Crystal Sun
Released in 2003
The title is misleading as the story line has nothing in common with the "Emmanuelle" series of movies. In the fact, the plot is closer to "Story of O" (without the S&M) plus some of the sex scenes from "Eyes Wide Shut" thrown in. A psychologist, frustrated by the frigidity of his wife, has her kidnapped by a secretive outfit that promises to convert her into the passionate woman he desires. Overall, the movie works well with its glossy look and surprisingly erotic scenes..

A group of Hong Kong buddies accidentally kill a girl while on a sex vacation in Thailand. Unfortunately for them, her brother happens to be a powerful witch doctor and he is now in Hong Kong to exact his revenge. This is a rather unusual movie that combines the sexy with the horrific. You'll be alternately aroused and scared witless every few minutes...but never bored.

Jan Dara
Starring Christy Chung
Released in 2001
This moody drama is set in 1930s Bangkok and was based on a popular Thai novel. After his mother dies during childbirth, Jan Dara is doomed to grow up with an abusive father and dysfunctional household. As a young man he ends up having an affair with his beautiful stepmother but finds that he is no better than his father. This is very serious movie with a few troubling scenes unlike the lighthearted fare of most Hong Kong category III movies.
